JT Morrow - Paintings / Illustrations
I like my work to be an explosion of color. I want the viewer to initially see the subject of the painting whether it’s a tree, a flower or a rocky coastline. But my work has to be more than that. I then want the viewer to see the brushwork, the splatter of paint, the spirit inside the painting that gives the work its life.
There is a quote from a seventeenth century Chinese, Li Li-Weng, who said something similar. He wrote: “First we see the hills in the painting, then we see the painting in the hills.” I believe my work is a cross between the classical Chinese brush painters and the French Impressionists. But with a strong Modernist edge—all stirred together to create something fresh and vibrant.
